Caffeinated Randomness: Done anything CORNy today?

Yesterday, I was gifted with four and half dozen ears of beautiful shucked corn. And it needed to be dealt with pronto...so, after loading myself up with Starbucks Sumatra...and revving my caffeinated engine...and going over the directions a couple of times....
I covered the floor and counters with newspapers...per the suggestion of my knowing friend!
I sharpened my favorite knife.
(FYI--RADA ROCKZ my socks!!)
I labeled a bunch of ziplocks with the month and year....
And then, I started my assembly line of washed corn...into boiling water for 5 minutes...
...after 5 minutes the hot batch goes into ice water bath for 5 minutes while a new batch goes into the boiling water...
...in between I cut the corn off the cobs of the cooled and dried corn...
You can check the time on my oven if you blow up the pictures...so you know that I started at about 8:08 AM...and here is my spotless kitchen at 9:33 AM. Only an hour and a half! WOW!!
AND...4 1/2 dozen corn equals 9 quarts...in case you're interested. The directions are in the Blue Ball book too.

Then the kids (who'd played REALLY well the whole corning time) helped me pick two gallons of crab-apples from our neighbor's tree (I think he thought I was nutsy when I asked if I could pick them.)

Next week...CRAB-APPLE jelly and butter! Let the insanity continue.

AHHH...now...I'm going to sit down with my book and some iced coffee and chill out.

Ahhhh...it's naptime!!

Hey, you won some cute ponytail holders that I don't even have listed in the store at the time I'm writing this comment to you. I have tons ready, they just aren't listed, and you're gettin' some. Email me with your address! :)

You know my corniness with bags was VBS crafts this week. I went through somewhere between 300-500 baggies (I totally lost count obviously and am not concerned enough to go back through my brain chambers and recalculate) sorting foam stickers and beads and suede cord and craft foam and conchos...it's over!

Bobbi, we are such complete Hoosiers. I've been freezing corn this week, too but I had no idea I was supposed to put the ears in a cold water bath for five minutes! I blanch them for 3 minutes, cut off the kernels, and put them in a bag. What does the cold water bath do? I think I must try this in my next round...

I also just froze 30 pounds of blueberries...I feel like a little squirrel hoarding nuts for winter but when I can have sweet corn and blueberries in January? WOOHOO!!! Worth it.

Have a great weekend, dear one!

I haven't shucked corn in a minute! Those were dreaded days for me at my grandmother's house.

My momma makes a mean batch of Fried Corn. It's my special request every time we go home.

You're very good with your time. You didn't waste it or dilly-dally it away. I'm impressed! :)

Oh my gosh... I can't believe you did all that in only an hour and a half! I get together with my mom every year to freeze corn and it seems to take us all day! That's alright though... I love the long visit! ;)

Stopping by from CR just a bit late!

How awesome Bobbi! My Mum and Aunt creamed a TON of corn a few weeks ago...it was insanity. But we will enjoy it this winter....just as you will enjoy all your corn :o)

Hope your weekend is going splendidly!
